Frequently Asked Questions

+ Why is this a paid event? What does my ticket get me?

We are making this a paid event to offset some of the venue rental and food costs. We are aware this is non-traditional, but so are a lot of things about this particular event. Read on!

Your ticket isn't just for registration though! You also get:

  • A free month's access to our "Marine Hacker Sandbox"
  • Food during the event.
  • Immediate access to the Hack for the Sea Slack channel
  • Access to any pre-hackathon Q&A Google Hangout sessions (schedule TBD)
  • A Snotbot Sticker
  • A Hack for the Sea waterproof dry bag.
  • A personal email from an organizer to confirm your registration to open lines of communication early.
+ Are there ID or minimum age requirements to enter the event?
There are no age restrictions. This is a family-friendly, kid-friendly event.
+ Should I come if I'm not technical, or not *that* technical?
You should still come. Your skill sets will be useful to any team, provided you share a love of and passion for the ocean.
+ What are my transportation/parking options for getting to and from the event?
The American Legion is walking distance from the Gloucester Commuter Rail station, and there is public parking available.
+ Can I bring preexisting work into the event?
YES. This year, we are trying something new: bring preexisting work in, if you want. Whatever makes it easiest for you to achieve the objectives of the challenges to the benefit of our organizations... go for it!
+ ...but doesn't starting early that give some teams an unfair advantage?

Maybe so - but the goal here isn't to win, it's to help the oceans. Whatever measures we take to that end are within bounds here.

To mitigate this, this year we're also doing judging differently - you will be judged holistically based on your efforts and conduct during the weekend. More details to follow.

+ How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
Yes. Reach out at to [email protected]
+ Who are you and why are you doing this?

Hack for the Sea is organized by a group of volunteers all around the country who are passionate about creating innovative solutions to help our oceans. It was founded in 2016 in Gloucester, MA by Mark Robert Henderson
